The Cyprus Culture Exam 2026
What is the Cyprus Culture Exam and who needs it?
Official name: Examinations for Certification of Sufficient Knowledge of Basic Elements of the Contemporary Political and Social Reality of Cyprus for Third Country Nationals.
The exam checks your knowledge about Cyprus: history, geography, state, culture. It is required to obtain long-term resident status or Cyprus citizenship.
The goal of the exam is to assess how active and engaged the candidate is as a member of society in the public and private life of Cyprus.
When does the exam take place?
The next exam is Saturday 21 November 2026. Registration for it closed on 12 October 2026; the next window is 11–18 January 2027, for the 6 March 2027 sitting. The exact start time will be announced once the Ministry knows how many people applied.
Since September 2026 the exam is held three times a year — it used to be twice, and the Ministry's stated reason for the change is the increased number of applicants: the February 2024 results list had 514 candidates, the March 2026 one 2,916 (our count from the lists). In 2027 the sittings are in March, July and November. It is in-person, in examination centers throughout Cyprus (usually schools in the Nicosia district).

In which language is the exam conducted?
The exam is conducted in Greek. This is a separate exam from Greek language certification — here only knowledge about Cyprus is tested.
Everything is in Greek: the questions, the answer options (labelled Α, Β, Γ, Δ) and, in candidates' experience, often the invigilators too. The rules do not allow you to ask them what a question means.
How long is the exam and what is the format?
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Duration | 45 minutes |
| Format | Multiple-choice questions |
| Number of questions | 25 — the same at every sitting since 2024 (Cyprus Mail on the 4 July 2026 sitting); the Ministry does not publish the count in advance |
What to bring (passport or ID, candidate card, blue pen), when the doors close and how to circle and change answers on the answer sheet: Exam day.
What is the pass mark?
The pass mark depends on the purpose of taking the exam:
| Purpose | Pass mark |

| Long-term resident | 50% |
| Naturalization (citizenship) | 60% |
How to find out the exam results?
- Results are published on the website of the Examination Service by candidate number — roughly 2–2.5 months after the exam date, judging by 2026
- Successful candidates collect the certificate in person at the Examination Service office on an assigned day (details in Exam results)

The exam consists of two types of questions:
Stable questions — geography, constitution, history. They do not change for years.

Frequently asked questions
Is the payment on JCC the registration itself?
Yes, payment on JCC is full registration for the exam. You do not need to register anywhere else. After payment just wait for the email with details.
I didn’t receive confirmation after payment. Is that normal?
Yes, that’s normal: apart from the card charge, there is no confirmation. The email with your candidate number, exam place and time comes later — a few days, sometimes three weeks, before the exam — from [email protected]. Check your spam folder.
What do I bring to the exam?
Your passport or ID card, your candidate card (Δελτίο Υποψηφίου) with the invitation letter, and a blue pen. Phones, pencils, erasers and correction fluid are not allowed, and nobody is let in once 20 minutes have passed from the start. Details in Exam day.
How much time is needed to prepare?
It depends on your level of Greek. With level A1+ we recommend learning specific vocabulary and practicing answering questions from past exams — for example, in the Hallouminati bot or app.
How long does it take to get the results?
Longer than most people expect: roughly 2–2.5 months, judging by 2026. The 7 March sitting got its results on 20 May 2026, and the 4 July sitting on 4 September 2026. Certificate collection starts a few days after publication. Lists, the collection schedule and how to collect by proxy are in Exam results.
How long is the certificate valid?
The certificate is valid indefinitely.
Is it possible to pass without knowing Greek?
The exam is entirely in Greek. We know of cases when people passed with level A0 (they knew basic words and could read), but this is more a matter of luck. There is a lot of specific vocabulary in the exam — names of state bodies, historical terms, geographical objects. You definitely need to learn this vocabulary in advance.
How many people pass on the first attempt?
In our survey after the 7 March 2026 sitting, about 82% of users who had prepared with the Hallouminati app passed at the level needed for citizenship (60%). The figure is for that sitting only.
Where can I get study materials?
We recommend our guide at hallouminati.app/cyprus-guide — it contains all the necessary materials to prepare for the exam.
